Every Epson inkjet printer, including the popular EcoTank L380, L383, L385, and L485 models, contains an internal component known as the waste ink pad (or "ink pad"). During regular use—whether for cleaning cycles, head maintenance, or borderless printing—the printer produces waste ink. This ink is collected by an absorbent pad made of foam material. To ensure this pad doesn't overflow and cause internal damage, the printer uses a software counter to track the accumulated waste. When this counter reaches a predetermined maximum, the printer halts all operations, the power and error lights flash alternately, and your computer displays a "Service Required" error indicating that the printer's ink pad has reached the end of its service life.
